National Scholarship Portal: the school’s side of it

The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is the Government of India’s single portal for applying to, verifying and paying central scholarships. Students apply after a one-time registration (OTR); the institute logs in separately to verify each application by its own deadline. For AY 2026-27 the portal opened on 1 June 2026, students must apply by 31 October 2026, and institutes must verify by 15 November 2026.

Official portal: scholarships.gov.in/ · Edutris is an independent software company and is not affiliated with Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology. Verify fees and dates on the official portal before acting.

What is the National Scholarship Portal?

NSP is the Government of India portal for central scholarships, described on the site as an initiative of the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology. It groups schemes as merit-based, welfare-based and fellowships, and runs each academic year as a cycle: the portal opens, students apply, institutes verify, a higher level verifies again, and payment follows through PFMS.

What must a student have before applying?

A One-Time Registration. In the portal’s words: “One Time Registration (OTR) is a unique 14-digit number issued based on the Aadhaar/Aadhaar Enrolment ID (EID) and is applicable for the entire academic career of the student”, and “OTR is required to apply for scholarship on National Scholarship Portal.” There is an NSP OTR app on Google Play, and NSP services are offered at Common Service Centres for a fixed ₹30 charge.

What does the institute do, and by when?

The institute registers on the portal (the site links a “How to fill Registration Form” guide and asks institutions to know their institute code, the page names the AISHE code, which is the higher-education identifier; a school should confirm the code it must use with its district nodal officer before registering). After registration the institute logs in to verify each student application.

For AY 2026-27 the published deadlines are: student applications by 31-10-2026, institute verification by 15-11-2026 and Level-2 verification by 30-11-2026. An application the institute has not verified by its deadline does not go forward.

Nodal officers are listed on the portal scheme-wise and district-wise; the portal does not publish the detailed verification steps themselves. Those come through the institute login and the nodal officer.

How does a school run a scholarship season on NSP?

  1. Register the institute (KYC) once, using the institute code confirmed with the district nodal officer.
  2. Before applications open, tell eligible students and parents to complete OTR. It is Aadhaar-based and takes time when Aadhaar details need correcting.
  3. Keep each applicant’s enrolment, class, category and fee details ready: the institute verifies the application against its own records.
  4. Verify every application before the institute deadline (15 November 2026 for AY 2026-27); unverified applications lapse.
  5. For payment queries, use the PFMS “Know Your Payment” tracker the portal links, not the NSP helpdesk.

What goes wrong, and the fix

A student cannot start an application.

They have no OTR. OTR is required before applying; generate it with Aadhaar or the Aadhaar Enrolment ID via the portal or the NSP OTR app.

The institute deadline passed with applications unverified.

The portal publishes no late-verification route; contact the district nodal officer listed on the portal. Next year, start verifying as applications arrive.

The registration form asks for an AISHE code the school does not have.

AISHE is the higher-education survey code. Confirm with the district nodal officer which identifier a school uses before submitting; do not enter a made-up code.

What Edutris does here, and what it does not

Does

  • Gives the office one place to pull each applicant’s enrolment, class and fee status (collections, dues and defaulters) when verifying applications.

Does not

  • Register the institute, submit applications or verify them on NSP. There is no NSP integration in Edutris.
  • Track NSP disbursements automatically. Payment tracking is on PFMS.

Frequently asked questions

Does the school apply on behalf of the student?

No. The student (or parent) applies under the student’s own OTR-based login. The institute’s job is to verify the application through the institute login by the institute deadline.

What are the NSP dates for AY 2026-27?

As published on the portal: opens 1 June 2026; student application deadline 31 October 2026; institute verification deadline 15 November 2026; Level-2 verification deadline 30 November 2026.

What is OTR and is it really mandatory?

The One-Time Registration is a 14-digit number issued on the basis of Aadhaar or the Aadhaar Enrolment ID and valid for the student’s entire academic career. The portal states plainly that OTR is required to apply.

Where does the school track whether money was paid?

On PFMS. The portal links a “Know Your Payment” page on pfms.nic.in for payment status and directs payment queries to the PFMS helpdesk.

Can Edutris verify NSP applications for us?

No. Verification happens only inside the institute login on NSP. Edutris keeps the student and fee records the verifier checks against.
