APAAR ID: how a school generates it, step by step
The APAAR ID (“One Nation, One Student ID”) is a unique 12-digit code created for a student from their UDISE+ record. The school initiates it: parents give consent, UDISE+ generates the ID against the student’s PEN, and the virtual card lands in the student’s DigiLocker. The one prerequisite that fails most often is that the name in UDISE+ must match the name on Aadhaar.

What is an APAAR ID and what is it for?
APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry and is described on the official site as “One Nation, One Student ID”: a unique 12-digit code under which a student’s academic records (scores, certificates, co-curricular achievements) accumulate across institutions for life. The official FAQ lists admissions, scholarships, concessions, credit transfers, internships, certifications and job applications as the facilities mapped through it.
It links to the Academic Bank of Credits (abc.gov.in) and to DigiLocker, which is where the student sees the card.
What does the school need before generating APAAR IDs?
The official site lists the information required for each student: the UDISE+ Unique Student Identifier (PEN), name, date of birth, gender, mobile number, mother’s name, father’s name, name as per Aadhaar and the Aadhaar number. The PEN is mandatory: a student not yet in UDISE+ cannot be issued an APAAR ID.
The prerequisite in the site’s own words: “The name of student as per student records in UDISE+ must match with the name of the student as per Aadhaar.” Fix the UDISE+ record before you begin; that is what the consent-form drive is for.
Where does the ID appear, and how does the school check status?
The generated ID is “pushed into student’s DigiLocker Account” and appears as a virtual APAAR ID card in DigiLocker’s Issued-documents section. The school-side view is the APAAR module inside UDISE+, where the official site says generation status can be checked.
How does the school generate APAAR IDs, step by step?
- Educate parents, the official process starts with parents visiting the school to learn what APAAR is.
- Collect consent, “Parents fill up consent form voluntarily for APAAR ID creation.” Consent is required for a minor.
- Verify the record, check that each student’s UDISE+ name, date of birth and gender match Aadhaar before submitting; the site names the name match as the prerequisite.
- Generate, “UDISE system generates APAAR ID against PEN ID of student.”
- Confirm, the ID is uploaded to the student’s DigiLocker; the school checks status in the UDISE+ APAAR module.
What goes wrong, and the fix
Generation fails with a demographic error.
The official FAQ says the error indicates a mismatch in the demographic details; correct the UDISE+ record (usually the name versus Aadhaar) and resubmit.
A student has no PEN.
The student is not in UDISE+, or was not carried into the current session. Add or update the UDISE+ record first, the PEN is mandatory for APAAR.
Parents ask whether it is compulsory.
The official FAQ describes consent as voluntary and does not state that the ID is mandatory. Give parents the official FAQ and helpline rather than a school-made answer.
What Edutris does here, and what it does not
Does
- Keeps the student master (name, date of birth, gender, parents’ names, mobile) in one record, so the fields APAAR checks are entered once and read back the same way, the same student master its UDISE+ head-start export is built from.
Does not
- Generate, request or store APAAR IDs from UDISE+. Edutris has no connection to UDISE+ or DigiLocker.
- Verify Aadhaar. Edutris never asks for or validates Aadhaar numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Who generates the APAAR ID, the parent or the school?
The school, through UDISE+. The official process is: parents are informed, parents give consent, UDISE+ generates the ID against the student’s PEN, and the card is pushed to the student’s DigiLocker. A parent cannot generate it directly for a school student.
Why does the Aadhaar name matter so much?
Because the official prerequisite is that the student’s name in UDISE+ must match the name on Aadhaar. A spelling difference (an initial expanded, a surname order) fails generation with a demographic-mismatch error until the UDISE+ record is corrected.
How does a student see their APAAR ID?
As a virtual APAAR ID card in the Issued-documents section of their DigiLocker account. The school sees the status in the APAAR module of UDISE+.
Is there an official helpline?
Yes: 1800 889 3511, listed on apaar.education.gov.in, which also has an FAQ and a resources page with the consent form.
Can Edutris create APAAR IDs for our students?
No. Only UDISE+ generates APAAR IDs. Edutris keeps the student master data that the school types into UDISE+ accurate; the consent drive and the generation happen on the portal.
