Teacher–Student Ratio Calculator
The Right to Education (RTE) Act sets pupil–teacher ratio (PTR) norms for Indian schools: 30:1 for primary (Classes 1–5) and 35:1 for upper primary (Classes 6–8). Enter your student and teacher counts to get your ratio and check whether you meet the norm — and how many teachers you may need to hire.
Headcount
32 : 1
RTE norm for Primary (Classes 1–5): 30:1
How it's calculated
Pupil–teacher ratio
The ratio is students ÷ teachers, expressed as (that number):1. For example, 320 students and 10 teachers gives a 32:1 ratio.
RTE norm check
RTE norms are 30:1 for primary (Classes 1–5) and 35:1 for upper primary (Classes 6–8). Select your level and we check whether your ratio is within the norm.
Teachers needed
If you are above the norm, we compute the additional teachers required so that students ÷ teachers meets the applicable RTE limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the RTE teacher–student ratio norm?
Under the RTE Act, the pupil–teacher ratio must not exceed 30:1 for primary schools (Classes 1–5) and 35:1 for upper primary schools (Classes 6–8). This calculator checks your school against the applicable norm.
How is the pupil–teacher ratio calculated?
Divide the total number of students by the total number of teachers. For example, 350 students with 10 teachers is a 35:1 ratio. A lower ratio means more individual attention per student.
How many more teachers do I need to meet RTE norms?
If your ratio exceeds the RTE limit, you need enough teachers so that students divided by teachers is at or below 30 (primary) or 35 (upper primary). This tool calculates the exact number of additional teachers required.
